Is Mindfulness a Magic Bullet?
No, Mindfulness is not a magic bullet to all ails…but mindfulness practice can have profound impact on how you meet your own difficulties.
A widely quoted definition of mindfulness by Jon Kabat Zinn, the founder of Mindfulness Stress Reduction Courses (MBSR), is this “Mindfulness is a paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally.
I have come to love this more pragmatic way of explaining mindfulness:
“Mindfulness is the ability to see what’s going on in your head….combined with the ability to not get carried away with it” by Dan Harris, News Anchor and Author of 10% Happier, How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge and Found Self-Help that Really Works – a True Story (and a long title!!!)
And how about that? How free-ing would it be to have control over managing one’s anxieties? Wouldn’t that be worth its weight in gold? Imagine being able to ride life’s up and downs with more ease. Imagine being resilient to everyday stresses…Imagine coping better during a major life event….
And this is what MBSR course could do for you….Mindfulness may not be an instant
magic bullet to all ails, but with practice and incorporating mindfulness into everyday life, studies have consistently shown that mindfulness helps all manner of people cope better with stress, depression and anxiety.
