Greenwich Runners 12ks Christmas Challenge

January 28, 2022 |

Have fun, stay fit and support your local charity this Christmas.

What’s it all about?

  • The challenge is to run 12kms every week in December (2022 challenge commences w/e 4th December, so for Strava purposes runs will count from Monday 28th November)
  • You can run all of your 12km in one go or split into a few runs over the week. If you come to Saturday run club, that’s around 5k in the bag already!
  • The challenge will culminate in a final group pub crawl run for all the Greenwich Runners and any friends that want to take part.  This will take in 6 pubs over a distance of 12km! You’ll need a sense of adventure, a sense of direction and a sense of humour! (speed is not a pre-requisite).  The 12km pub crawl will take place on Tuesday 27th December (bank holiday).  Meet at the Greenwich Tavern pub from 11:30am for the 11:50 (ish) departure, wearing something festive (think 12 days of Christmas?) or as this year’s charity is the Greenwich Foodbank, perhaps you’d like a food themed outfit?

Running for Charity

The 2022 event will raise money to support the Greenwich Foodbank (Trussell Trust) as voted for by Greenwich Runners:  About the Greenwich Foodbank: “We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.”

How do I get Involved?

Please donate to this worthy cause here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/12ks2022.

The suggested minimum entry donation is £10 per person (children are also welcome to take part) but feel free to donate more if you can! Don’t forget to tick gift aid if you are eligible.

In previous years we have supported the Dorothy House hospice that cared for Greenwich Runner Maddie’s mum Carole, the mental health charity Mind, the Deborah Ubee Trust, the Evelyn Community Store in Deptford, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Heart UK.

The Greenwich Runners 12ks of Christmas has raised £6000 for charity, to date.

The December Weekly Challenge

In the weeks of December leading up to the group finale run (weeks ending 4th December, 11th December, 18th December, 25th December), you should aim to run a minimum of 12km per week.  You can choose to run as many or as few runs as you like.  Of course, you may want to run much further than 12km each week, but 12km is the minimum combined distance each week in order to complete the challenge and be presented with that all important medal!

To record your distances officially (optional and not a requirement to get a medal) you should sign up to Strava where official distances will be recorded.  If you would like to join the Strava group, please search for ‘Greenwich Runners 12ks of Christmas 2022‘ (or click on the link).  Once you have signed up, you don’t need to do anything else – all runs you record will count automatically!  Only activities recorded as runs will count towards this challenge (so if you are taking part as a walker, please record your walks as runs).

If you would like to be added to the What’s App group so that you can share photos of your runs and find out important information about the finale, please email your name and phone number to: 12ksofchristmas@gmail.com.

The Final Challenge: 12km Festive Pub Crawl

The final challenge will take place on Tuesday 27th December (bank holiday).  Timings are approximate! We will all run together and will leave the pubs together when everyone is ready. This is very much a group fun run! Recommended: a substantial breakfast at around 10am.  Total time – around 3 hours, starting from around 11:30 am, somewhere in Greenwich! The pub crawl suits all paces.  We have had walkers each year too, if you fancy taking it easy.

The route will be as follows:

  1. The Greenwich Tavern (meeting point 11:30am)
  2. The Pelton Arms (12 noon to 12:20ish)
  3. The Pilot Inn (12:45ish to 13:15ish)
  4. The Crown (13:30ish to 14:00ish)
  5. The Hare and Billet (Blackheath) (14:20ish to 14:50ish)
  6. The Richard 1st (end point at 15:00-15:15ish for medals – stay as long as you like)

FAQs

1) Do I need to pay for Strava and record each run in a special way?

No. Just the basic free Strava and join the ‘Greenwich Runners 12ks of Christmas 2022’ club. All runs will be automatically recorded under the club once you are part of it.  You can enter activities manually (please record all walks as runs to have them count towards your total if you are unable to run currently).

2) when does the challenge start?

Runs will start counting towards the challenge from 1st week of December (with Strava recording everything from Monday 28th November)

The last day of the challenge will be Christmas Day with the pub crawl the following Tuesday 27th December.

3) do I have to do 12km runs?

No, you could do 12 x 1km runs each week if you like! It’s just a minimum of 12kms each week in total.

4) can I walk instead, as I’m pregnant/injured/hungover/not at my physical peak?

Sure! But only activities ‘recorded’ as runs on Strava will count towards your total.

5) can I bring the kids and dogs on the finale pub crawl?

If they can keep up! (But there are plenty of GRs’ teenagers available as baby/dog sitters if being responsible for a child or dog would in any way hinder your enjoyment 🤣)

6) when is the deadline to make my entry donation?

You can make your entry donation anytime in December.

7) do we run altogether at the pub crawl?

Yes. Though the group will naturally spread out between pubs (because..Find Your Own Pace), we will regroup at every pub and won’t leave until everyone’s had a chance to get a drink.

8) How will we all get served!!?

It is recommended that you form groups of around 6 people for round-buying purposes.

9) what on earth should one wear!?

Huffin and Puffin t shirts (if you have one from previous years), something festive themed (think 12 days of Christmas) or maybe something food related as we are running to support the Greenwich Foodbank!?

10) do I have to have a pint in every pub!?

That my friends is up to you….. it can make Maze Hill easier to run up!
